Pediatric ENT surgery
Many children suffer from thick nasal mucus, nasal obstructions, and snoring. Some also suffer from sleep apnea. It is most important to diagnose and treat these children as early as possible.
Treatment
The most effective treatment is surgery – adenoidectomy – to remove the adenoids. The procedure is very short - about 10 minutes – and the child returns to regular activity the same day. A few days after the operation the parents will be able to see considerable improvement in the quality of the child's sleep, improved nasal breathing, and reduced nasal mucus.
Ear surgery
Another common problem in children is incomplete development of the ear's drainage system, leading to the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear. This can cause ongoing damage to the eardrum, and varying degrees of hearing loss.
The importance of proper hearing at a young age cannot be overemphasized. Hearing loss can cause a delay in language development, and good hearing is especially critical in the child's early years, when his general development is so greatly affected by the amount and quality of this information absorbed.
The treatment is divided into two stages:
• Medication, including antihistamines, in order to dry out the fluid.
• If this treatment is unsuccessful, grommets (tympanostomy tubes) are inserted into the eardrum to ventilate the middle ear.
This is a short operation with no side effects. After the operation the child should avoid getting water in his ears for about a year, until the grommets fall out by themselves.
