Tests performed at the Heart Institute:
• Cardiac consultation • Ergometry test (cardiac stress test) • Echocardiography • Stress echocardiography • Holter test • 24 hour blood pressure monitoring • Heart scans
What is an echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. It enables assessment of the heart's structure and function, and provides information on congenital heart defects and functioning of the heart valves, heart thickness, and muscle contractions.
What is stress echocardiography?
This test is performed in conjunction with an echocardiogram, at rest and during exertion. It assesses heart muscle function at rest and during stress, and diagnoses a lack of oxygen to the heart muscle. The quality of the diagnosis is equal to that of a heart scan, and has the advantage of avoiding radiation.
What is a Holter test?
This is a test which monitors heart rhythm over a 24-hour period. The patient wears a small portable device attached to his chest, which makes a continuous recording of an ECG over a period of time, enabling abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) to be detected over a 24 hour period.
What is a 24 hour blood pressure monitor?
In this test, a tiny portable device is worn, which records blood pressure throughout the day and night over a 24 hour period. You must fast for 2 hours before the test (However, you may drink water and take medications as necessary) as instructed in the invitation.
What is an ergometry test?
This is a cardiac stress test which records heart activity and blood pressure during ECG monitoring. The test provides information on heart fitness, lack of oxygen to the heart, cardiac arrhythmias, and blood pressure response to stress. If you have been scheduled for a stress echocardiogram the procedure is as follows:
• A regular echocardiogram is performed. • You are given a cardiac stress test on a computerized treadmill • An additional echocardiographic simulation is performed after the exercise
The test takes about half an hour.
This test assesses heart muscle contractions at rest and under stress, helps to diagnose coronary vascular disease, and gives the cardiologist data with which to determine further treatment.
Instructions to the patient scheduled for an ergometry test or stress echocardiogram:
In order for the test to be performed under optimal conditions, you must stop taking the medications listed below either 48 or 24 hours prior to the test.
In cases of high blood pressure, or on the treating physician's instructions, the medication must not be stopped. NB – some medications must be stopped 48 hours before the test, and some 24 hours before the test.
Any medications not listed below may continue to be taken.
Medications that must be stopped 48 hours before the test:
Normiten, Deralin, Trasicor, Prolol, Ateni, Cardiloc, Concor, Dimitone, Neobloc, Metopress, Lopressor, Normalol, Veracor, Verapress, Dilapress, Ikacor, Dilatam, Tevozem. Medications that must be stopped 24 hours before the test:
Mononit, Isotard, Isordil, Nitroderm, Deponit, Monolong, Monocord, Nitrovis, Adalat, Megalat, Osmo-adalat, Isocardid, Penedil, Norvasc.
You must fast for 2 hours before the test (you may drink water and take medications as necessary) as instructed in the invitation letter.
