The Mammography Institute of the Mayanei HaYeshua Medical Center works to diagnose breast cancer early. Diagnosis of the disease at an early stage is a major factor in saving lives, as it significantly increases the chances of recovery to about 90%.
As part of the institute’s activities, both benign and malignant breast diseases are diagnosed using advanced imaging technologies: mammography, breast MRI and breast ultrasound. In addition, the institute performs complementary diagnostic tests such as biopsies and needle tests using various methods, in order to accurately diagnose the nature of the findings. The center is equipped with the most advanced imaging systems, which allow a high level of accuracy in the location and detection of pathological changes in the breast.
Mammography
A special X-ray of breast tissue, which is currently considered the leading method for early detection of breast cancer, and is approved as part of screening programs. According to the directive of the Ministry of Health, women aged 50-74 are entitled to a mammogram examination every two years, as part of the national screening program. However, we recommend starting mammograms as early as age 40, as often as every one or two years – as recommended by the attending physician. Further, there is no restriction on performing the test even at older ages, and women over the age of 74 who are in good health and with no serious background diseases can continue to be tested. Numerous studies indicate that having regular mammograms reduces the mortality rate from the disease due to the ability to detect tumors at an early stage.
Breast MRI
A Breast MRI is considered to be one of the most sensitive tests for early detection of breast cancer. The test is performed using magnetic resonance – without the use of X-rays – and enables detection of malignant tumors even when they are not yet visible using other imaging tests, such as ultrasound and mammography.
Breast Ultrasound
A test to evaluate findings in the breast that is usually performed among young women of childbearing age, pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding when a lump in the breast is felt. The test is also suitable for women with dense breast tissue, in cases where mammography alone is insufficient in providing complete information. The test makes it possible to distinguish between cysts – fluid-filled benign lumps, which are usually not dangerous – and solid lumps, for which a biopsy test is also usually required to complete the diagnosis.
Biopsy tests
When a suspicious finding is discovered through imaging tests such as mammography or ultrasound, the most accurate way to understand its nature is through a biopsy – taking a small sample from the tissue for pathological examination. A biopsy is also performed when a malignant finding is suspected, and even in cases where it may be normal tissue – but there is a need for an unequivocal diagnosis. The results of the biopsy help doctors determine how to progress with treatment: whether surgery is needed, and if so what type, and whether chemotherapy or another treatment is needed. Biopsies are performed at the institute using a thick needle under ultrasound direction, or in combination with a mammogram. When it comes to a benign finding like a cyst, suction is performed with a fine needle.
The test is included in the basket of services under the National Health Insurance Law, and women aged 50-74 are entitled to a free examination every two years. Women in risk groups are eligible for screening from an earlier age, once a year.
The hospital is independent of the HMO, and members of all HMOs are accepted there.
Members of Meuhedet HMO and Maccabi are admitted to the clinic by presentation of a referral only or by payment according to the hospital's price list.
As part of the agreements with Clalit and Leumit HMOs, Forms 17 will be given to the outpatient clinics, or a payment will be made according to the hospital's price list.
