Home / Clinics & Institutes / Voice and Swallowing clinic
The clinic provides a professional solution for adults suffering from voice disorders (various diagnoses related to the vocal cords, such as cord paralysis, warts/polyp on the vocal cords, etc.), swallowing difficulties, patients after head and neck surgery, throat tumors and neurological diseases. Diagnosis and treatment are carried out at the clinic by a qualified speech therapist who specializes in the rehabilitation of swallowing and voice.
Untreated swallowing disorders can impair quality of life, cause malnutrition, dehydration and even pneumonia. Professional and personalized treatment may improve swallowing safety, facilitate eating, and reduce the risk of complications.
The treatment of swallowing and voice disorders includes:
Clinical evaluation
Exercising of the swallowing muscles and the voice
Determining and implementing appropriate safety strategies
Adaptations to food texture
Voice disorders are continuous or repeated changes in voice quality that may impair the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. They manifest as hoarseness, vocal fatigue, effort in speech, decreased volume or a sense of “roughness” and difficulty in controlling voice. These disorders can occur at any age, especially after prolonged vocal exertion or nerve damage to the vocal cords. The treatment in most cases includes vocal rehabilitation through performing exercises under the guidance of a speech therapist, with the aim of improving the quality of the voice, reducing the effort involved, and returning to normal voice function as far as possible.
Swallowing disorders are defined as difficulty in delivering food or drink safely and effectively to the esophagus. This is a complex physiological process, involving full coordination between the muscles of the mouth, pharynx and breathing. When this coordination is damaged, symptoms such as coughing, choking, feeling stuck, or food entering the trachea may manifest. Swallowing disorders can occur due to a variety of medical conditions, such as stroke and neurological diseases, head and neck surgeries, throat tumors, or the natural aging process.
Coughing or choking during or after eating
Change in voice after swallowing (e.g. wet voice)
Feeling that food is “stuck” in the throat
Chewing difficulty, decreased appetite, or unexplained weight loss
